April 2024 Concert Reviews
MCKNA @ The 5 Spot 4/11
I met MCKNA and her band at a Halloween party and we INSTANTLY hit it off. She has non-stop energy and that is seen in her shows. Jamming out and rocking a pink dress and boots, she KILLED her set! I was truly blown away by her vocals!!! I knew she had the energy but had no clue how great her voice was! Her guitarist, Ashley Briggs, who also plays for “Break and Enter” (featured in last month’s Newsletter), and the rest of the band somehow keep up with MCKNA’s great energy.
Additionally, she keeps this energy up for other people’s shows as well. We got to see a newer band, “Meet Me Out Front” perform their second show and MCKNA did NOT stop dancing and singing! Overall her energy kept everyone else up and it’s so refreshing to see someone be such an encouragement and cheerleader for upcoming bands!
MCKNA’s next show will be May 19 @ DRKMTTR!

Jack the Underdog @ Cannery Hall 4/20
Swemo Legend Jack the Underdog had his DEBUT ALBUM release party this month and it was such a good PARTY!! There is no other way to describe it. We started out with Riot House (an independent collective of alternative artists) member Chloey Wilson opening the show with some catchy tunes and Jack on the guitar! Then DJ BOURGEOIS lit up the stage with some throwback emo music and the energy was THROUGH THE ROOF. He made sure EVERYONE was having fun and he played all the hits! Then we had one of my personal favorites, as featured on last month’s merch review, davvn. Davvn is a pop punk band that is pure nostalgia and fun. With the bouncing DVD logo in the back of their set they sang their hit rom-com soundtrack “boy next door” and a new song “Never Have I Ever” with a crowd participation game. Then we finally got to see Jack the Underdog perform with his band rocking some sweet pink camo pants. He played his debut album “HAPPY SADDERDAY!” in full. My personal favorite is “BAD INFLUENCE” and he got the crowd going. In between his album songs, he played his famous Taylor Swift “Swemo” covers and brought up another favorite artist of mine, Glitch Gum. They performed their song “FRIEND REQUEST” with some crowd participation and it was so much fun! Glitch Gum goes WILD on stage and in the crowd, so he kept the energy going. That song plus the album have been ON REPEAT ever since! Jack is making big moves in the industry and we are excited to see where he goes next!
Jack the Underdog’s next show will be May 19th @ The Cobra!

BACKHAND BLUE @ The Cobra 4/21
We hit up The Cobra to see our friends Dead Before Impact play their second show! They performed even better than last time and you could tell they were a lot more comfortable this time around. Following their set came To Kill A Monster from Columbus, Ohio and we were blown away! The lead singer had some crazy vocals that he kept up all night! They were a lot of fun and ended their set with a pirate song, which included a full sized flag and pirate hat. And then the house got BLOWN DOWN by headliner, BACKHAND BLUE. Wrapping up their tour in their hometown, they brought a whole PRODUCTION. Probably the best local performance I have ever seen! It started out with a timer counting down with lights and graphics, and then lead singer, Macy, runs up on stage and hits you with that first note of their latest single “PARANOID”. Between her bright blue hair, the lighting, the smoke effects, the screens, and her iconic blue crocs, it was hard to know where to look. But what really stole the show was Macy’s vocals and energy. She was hitting these powerful notes the whole show and running around and did not seem out of breath ONCE. Her bandmates were very interactive as well and added to the whole production. The show ended with high energy and some stanky leg moves so it was definitely a night to remember. Follow them to see where they’re performing next because you won’t want to miss it!

Merch Review: Space-O’s Cereal from The Star Child Universe – Alexis Donn
I really want to applaud all of the artists making out of the box merch lately because I am loving all of it! Intergalactic Alien Pop Star Alexis Donn just had a big performance at H.O.M.E. here in Nashville and I got to participate in the event! Hosted by H.O.M.E., NashLive, Differently, and UMC, it was a huge show that really let the 3 acts create their own EXPERIENCE for a show. Alexis has created her own alter ego into a pop star alien who has landed on Earth to perform here in Nashville. With her space boots and glittery pink outfit, she started working on promoting this show and with that she found herself collaborating with Wanna Spoon Cereal Bar on making some cereal from space. This allowed for the narrative that Alexis brought “Space-O’s” to Earth because that’s what aliens eat. And now you can get your own for only four “Starbucks”. It is a fruity marshmallow sweet dream of a cereal that will make you feel like a kid again. And don’t worry if you’re a human eating this, Alexis claims that this cereal comes from the Star Child Universe, “which has a very high vibration, and the earth has a lower frequency […] and the best thing you can do at a low frequency is eat something with high vibration.” This is some genius level marketing/merch. Not only does she have a whole story/character behind this cereal, but it’s also inexpensive, really unique, and something people can buy over and over at every show. It is the perfect piece of merchandise and I encourage more artists to think outside the box like this!
